About Rode College

Logline

When an intelligence officer steps into the world of Rode College, student leaders turn against a corrupt politician who has been manipulating the college's youth for two generations for his own political gains.

Based on a True Story

‘Rode College’ portrays two different eras of Punjab - Early 90’s the militancy movement and 2011 showcasing the gangster culture manipulated by politics. The film is a coming of age socio-political drama, engaging the lives of college students at the central theme, against the backdrop of upcoming elections. The film is inspired by true events that happened at Rode, Moga.

Brief History

Rode is a village in Moga district of Punjab (known in history for Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale and recently for Amritpal). Rode College is a set of colleges in the Moga district of Punjab which is infamous for its rowdy student culture. The film ‘Rode College’ has been directed and produced by people who have either studied or witnessed the events of this notorious college as this college has been known throughout its history for its ruffianism. The story that this film shows is exemplary of the kind of youth culture that Punjab has become famous for. It is an insight into the environment that breeds anti-establishment student leaders who go on to inspire further radicalism in youth that follows them.

Synopsis

In 2011, the student leaders were preparing for their student elections under the patronage of a corrupt politician, who has used the youth of Rode College as his political backbone. However, the entry of an intelligence officer is a turning point for both the college and the politician. He disillusions the college students about the politician's agendas and inspires them to speak against the injustices of the politician's ways. This coincides with the electoral campaigning of the politician where the college students and the intelligence officers come together to protest against him and apply themselves fully to help the opposition candidate. Helping them also is another intelligence officer who holds a 20 year old personal grudge against the politician. What follows is an intense struggle to bring justice to the many victims of the corrupt politician, but an unfortunate turn of events ignites the passions of all parties involved. The film is inspired by true events. Rode College’s writing and direction is inspired by the two worlds that exist in one’s college life - one of carelessness inside the college walls, while outside there is a real world with all its problems. As a dialogue in the movie captures it, “there is a crossroads near every college, where students get passionate and make a decision with no-return.” That’s what the film is about - those decisions made in a split second, but that have a lasting impact on a person’s life. As another dialogue in the movie goes, “when the youth stands up, it overturns the thrones of even the mightiest of rulers.” This is a central theme of the film as it shows how powerful the passions of young adults can be, depending on which direction it is channeled in.

Producer's Note

The film ‘Rode College’ is about the journey of college students who transform themselves through engagement with history from being fun seeking wayward youth to persons who raise the banner of revolt and sacrifice their lives in the process. The film also brings forth the roots of the culture and its beauty, importance of a family and brotherhood. ‘Rode College’ is a complete family entertainer “masala” movie, with a mass appeal catering to all age groups. With comedy, friendship, love, drama and Politics sprinkled across the plot, there is enough to keep the audience engaged and make them not leave the seats. The film tries to awaken the youth, lost in the pseudo world of power, and to find that power within to bring a change that they want to see in this world. The entire film is shot at Live Locations (Arts College and Polytechnic College, Rode), keeping to the true essence of the story.
